Outline:
Autoimmune fatigue and mental health, the top two symptoms associated with autoimmune conditions, are often overlooked in conventional medicine despite being significant concerns for those diagnosed with these disorders. The rising prevalence of autoimmune conditions has brought with it an increase in associated mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. Naturopathic doctors are uniquely positioned to help patients regain their quality of life by addressing the specific fatigue and mental health challenges that stem from autoimmune disorders.
In this presentation, we will explore the distinctive nature of autoimmune fatigue, delving into the three commonly overlooked causes and examining the evidence and research behind them. We will also discuss the functional testing and relevant technology that naturopathic practitioners can utilize in their practice to track patient progress and recovery, as well as strategies for immediate implementation.
Furthermore, we will address the growing mental health concerns accompanying the surge in autoimmune conditions. Studies have found higher rates of psychiatric and mental health diagnoses among those with autoimmune diseases, with pathophysiological factors such as inflammation and immune stimulation contributing to an increased risk for mental health issues. Regrettably, conventional treatment options often consist of pharmaceuticals and counseling referrals, which may not adequately address the root causes and can leave many patients without relief.
Naturopathic doctors have the opportunity to support, manage, and co-manage these complex cases, using their expertise to assess patients’ needs and employ the tools and skills necessary to address the underlying pathophysiology. This comprehensive approach can ultimately lead to improved mental health and overall quality of life for those living with autoimmune conditions.
