First Hour:

  • Introduction – content sensitivity (mention of mortality and chemotherapy)
  • Prevalence of breast cancer in Canada
  • Risk factors for breast cancer
  • Screening guidelines (mammogram) – discussion of self breast exams + thermography
  • Treatment options and side effects (surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, endocrine therapy)
  • Special considerations for breast cancer survivors while conducting a naturopathic intake (cardiovascular, lymphedema, fatigue, menopause symptoms

Second Hour

  • Integrative treatment strategies:
    • Physical activity
    • Nutrition – foods that have been shown to reduce risk of breast cancer and breast cancer recurrence/controversial foods – dairy, soy, green tea, coffee, omega 3 fatty acids, cruciferous vegetables, flaxseed
    • Supplements – mushrooms (ganoderma, coriolus), curcumin, melatonin, vitamin D
    • Intravenous vitamin C and mistletoe – research update for breast cancer
