Outline for this presentation:

Introduce hormones used in men’s and women’s health in the context of Oral Contraception, Vaginal contraception (IUD – levonorgestrel (Mirena)), Prostatic treatment (tamsulosin (Flomax)) and ED treatment (sildenafil (Viagra)).

* Drug discussion will include:

  • Discussion of clinical indications of use, contra-indications of use, side effects of drug use and herb/nutrient interactions.
  • Current study investigations and findings in the long=term implications of hormonal treatments and ultimate health outcomes.
  • Discuss possible naturopathic support therapies to use concurrently or as alternatives and the risk/benefit ratios or either approaches.

WOMEN’S HEALTH:

BCP:

Review history of the development of oral contraceptives. Compare and contrast the various allopathic BCPs on the market, highlighting advantages and disadvantages to the various categories, their indications of use and adverse effects/ interactions. A more thorough focus on the drospirenone – ethinyl estradiol drug (Yasmin) – looking at indication, drug-nutrient interactions, contra-indications, and adverse effects.

IUD:

Levonorgestrel (Mirena):  short- and long-term health impacts.

MEN’S HEALTH:

BPH:

Statistical prevalence, mechanism of treatment using tamsulosin (Flomax) as well as Naturopathic supportive therapies.

ED:

Brief introduction to the current statistics of prevalence and drug treatments used. Discuss the mechanism of action of sildenafil (Viagra) and possible areas of naturopathic supports.
