Hour 1

  • Define burnout.
  • Discuss how burnout is measured.
  • Review statistics about burnout (i.e., prevalence data).
  • Outline the factors/contributors driving burnout, and the consequences.
  • Burnout’s three cardinal symptoms
  • Neurobiology of burnout
  • Describe the energy account concept – full or empty?
  • Discuss the importance of burnout.

Hour 2

  • The antidote to burnout is wellness.
  • Describe why practitioner wellness is an ethical and public health issue – that practitioners have the responsibility to maintain their own health and wellness as well as promote that of their colleagues.  
  • Outline the “The Health Professional Wellness Hierarchy.”
  • Discuss the different levels of the hierarchy.
    • Level 1 – physical and mental health.
    • Level 2 – safety and security
    • Level 3 – respect
    • Level 4 – appreciation and connection
    • Level 5 – healing patients and contributing at the fullest of one’s ability
  • Discussion of evidence-based modalities to support wellness (e.g., specific micronutrients, botanical extracts, deep and slow breathing, exercise, drumming, etc.).
  • Describe how to use the wellness hierarchy.
  • Implications and conclusions.
