Outline:

Introduction (10 minutes)

Introduction to allopathic drug management strategies in treating Menopausal women in Canada.

A brief understanding of the history of menopausal treatment choices and how they have changed. 

Introduce current treatment goals, physiologic targets and guiding principles for the clinical drug selection in the management and treatment of menopause and its symptoms.

 

Comparing the 2 major DRUG based treatment categories involved in current established drug management options for: menopause and its related symptoms.

(i) FIRST LINE OPTIONS: NON-HORMONAL TREATMENTS (60 minutes)

  • Antidepressants: Venlafaxine, Paroxetine, Fluoxetine, Citalopram
  • Gabapentin, Pregabalin
  • Clonidine
  • Oxybutynin
  • Fezonlinetant – the NEW treatment option in Canada

(ii) HORMONAL TREATMENTS (35 minutes)

  • Traditional HRT options and current choices
  • Bioidentical HRT options in Naturopathic Medicine

Including a brief discussion on the current options available, who are the best candidates, what does research say regarding their use. Concluding with issues to consider in their use and interactions with other drugs / herbs / nutrients.

(iii) Emerging research and treatment in menopause management (10 minutes)

All drug discussion will include (with supportive clinical studies), discussion of mechanisms of action and clinical indications of use, contra-indications of use, side effects of drug use and herb/nutrient interactions.
